Carrot Top ♥

I hate that the first thing people think when you say "carrot top" is that over-roid-raged mediocre comic, when they should be thinking of Lucy or Joanie from MadMen. Hah. In any case, I've dyed my hair! Whoo! I couldn't decide between blonde and red, so when I arrived, we talked it over and did a test strip. It seems that my hair chose for me. Cookie and I spent the day at Chemistry Hair Salon here in Shreveport and the end result was great!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!! So happy with the end result. [I'll have some non-iPhone pictures to post soon!]

My experience at Chemistry was really great. I'm glad to say that after a few years of shopping, I've finally found a great group of people to trust with my locks.  Bryan and his team have a great vibe in a comfortable and easy going space. You really get the feeling that they're all really eager to learn and try new things as well as master the skills they already possess. I've been to several salons over the years and I can definitely say that Chemistry has been my most positive experience.  [& thanks to Cookie for hanging out with me through the transformation! Billy Zane would be proud!]

My fabulous new hairstylist Aubre did such a great job and put up with me for an entire afternoon, which is a feat in of itself. I'll definitely be bugging many of you to go see her! I've got some referral cards, so let me know if you're looking for a new look for Spring and I'll point you in the right direction.

Sparkle Motion ♥

... never doubt my commitment to Sparkle Motion!! Picked these up last week. I've been looking for more sparkly goodness to add to my shoe horde, but I never dreamed it would be this easy and inexpensive. Don't these remind you of last season's Miu Miu sparkle collection!? Ah! Dream shoes, really. They're Steve Madden and I go them for twenty-two American Earth dollars. Do you hear me!? $22!! And for more of a surprise ... I got them at DSW!! I'm not sure if I've expressed my dislike for DSW before, but let me just say that I am almost never impressed when I go in that store, so this was definitely a shocker. Usually they have super boring shoes for a small percentage off ... you know, reasonable shoes for people who need them. Not bananas crazy awesome shoes for people who crave them. There is a big difference. Thank shoeJesus I took a chance on the ol' Warehouse that day!

Magical ♥

BONUS: Here is the way Sparkle Motion was supposed to go ... with one of my favorite Pet Shop Boys songs!! But, it was cheaper to use Duran Duran's Notorious, so that is what made the final cut.

Way better with West End Girls, don't you think?

Tee-Hee ♥

It's Friday!! I have to pat myself on the back for a great week. I'd like to do that with some cute pictures that make me "tee-hee" with happiness. [below] I amp'ed up my workouts to every day, which has really worked me over, but I couldn't be happier, really. I truly enjoyed Valentine's Day this year Although it was a Tuesday that involved work and class for both Brandon and myself until 9pm, we ended the evening with a great dinner and a surprise gift exchange. I thought it was wonderful that we surprised each other at the end of the day. ♥

I'd like to welcome my new followers!! Thanks so much for your interest in Hesson Haus. I am a little all over the place, but I consider this a "lifestyle" blog, mostly consisting of shoes, food & random internet pictures. [Although I take all my own photos for the other posts!] Honestly, it's my favorite kind of blog. Why limit yourself? Here, you can have it all ...

C-SPANin' it, y'all!

It's just Wednesday, but this week has already been really busy! I found out last Friday that
C-SPAN would be on campus this week as part of their Cities Tour. The purpose of their tours is to venture into historical cities across the country, interviewing local historians, students and community leaders to showcase their unique elements. Shreveport has some great historical landmarks and I was proud to be a part of this event. I was asked by the LSUS Archives to act as a student representative for their segment on the coroner's records I worked on last year. I'm incredibly proud of the work I was able to be a part of and the collection means a lot to me. I was also asked by Dr. Joiner to represent the History Club with the Oakland Cemetery segment. This project is dear to my heart and I'm so glad that our little group is going to get some recognition. My hope is that we will get some local attention as well and maybe this will help with our plans to have a city clean up of Oakland Cemetery at the end of the semester.

Here are a few snapshots [via Instagram] of the process. Sorry for those of you who have seen these pictures already! I haven't had my "real" camera with me all week.

The meet & greet/press conference was a nice way to kick off the week's events.

Mayor Glover!

Seared to Perfection ♥

This has become one of my favorite things to cook. So easy and simple but really delicious and healthy, too! The act of searing steak is used to literally seal in the juices of the meat that you're cooking. In the case of tuna, it's really more of an attempt to use the herbs and seasoning to create a seal on the outside, while keeping the middle nice and raw.

Here's what you'll need:
1 large, very thick tuna steak, not frozen! Usually about .75lb [Kroger usually has them.]
1/3 bottle Montreal Steak seasoning [low sodium]
1 tbsp paprika
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp sage
1 tbsp rosemary
The spice measurements are not exact. I really just kind of do it "to taste" ... the only thing to keep in mind is that the Montreal Steak seasoning is the main part. And don't add more salt! So, don't use garlic salt, use garlic powder to make sure you're not adding more salt.

What to do:
Preheat a skillet with a little olive oil. You want it to be pretty hot, so medium high would be best.

In a large Tupperware [you'll need it to be flat on the bottom & have a top], mix together all the seasonings. Dredge the tuna steak in the mixture. The fish has it's own oils, so you won't need to dredge it in anything prior to the mix. Make sure you have all of the tuna completely covered and then start searing the steak in the pan. It's best to start with the outer edges. Sear each side of the tuna for about 2 minutes only. When you're finished, place the seared steak back into the Tupperware, seal the top and put it in the refrigerator for a few hours. Placing it in the refrigerator allows the steak to get firm enough to slice, as well as completing the herb seal. Whoo!

To serve, slice into thin, even slices and serve as an appetizer or as the main dish of a meal. This goes amazingly well with all salads. Although it is essentially raw fish, it doesn't taste like Asian cuisine like sushi can. [I don't like to eat sushi with anything other than Asian foods and flavors.] It truly goes well with a large variety of foods as well as wines and beer. Pairing with a Guinness and some artichoke bread is a great idea, as well as with white wine and a salad. Or even for a quick lunch with some coconut water or iced tea. I can't sell it enough.

Now ... for the best part! There's more! I've got a great little dip you can make to serve it with. The most important thing to remember about this dip is that you only need a teeny tiny bit when you use it!

Mix the following in a small bowl:
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp balsamic vinaigrette dressing
1 tbsp milk
[you can add wasabi if you wish!]

Enjoy! ♥
