Bébé ♥

"You can't plan your own baby shower!" ... I heard this from nearly everyone. I'm here to tell you that you can, indeed, plan your own baby shower, if you like that sort of thing. And if you have amazing friends who will help you pull it off, you're officially as lucky as I am!

When I told Cookie I was pregnant [she was the first to know after Brandon because we work together and there was no way that I could keep it from her!] we immediately started talking about parties. As you well know, I love to throw parties. Themed parties being my favorite, Cookie and I started narrowing down the ideas.

I don't like baby showers. There, I said it! Most of them are just "too much" for me to handle with the terrible games [Really? Melting candy bars in diapers and measuring how FAT a pregnant person is? Who the hell came up with this torture?] and the present-opening, etc. So I decided that I really just wanted a garden party at tea time that would also double as a celebration in anticipation for Winnie's arrival. My rules were simple ... men and women were invited, there must be a themed cocktail, no games, and I wasn't going to open presents while everyone stared at me and giggled. I got 3 out of 4, so needless to say, I'm very pleased with the outcome. In the end, I realized that the opening of the gifts isn't really about the gift-getter, but the gift-giver. People like to see you open presents they give you. So, I sat down on a beautiful velvet couch and opened them one by one like a good little [giant] pregnant lady.

I don't like a hard theme, just a feel ... so I went with ethereal, with a dash of French country. So, lots of ethereal decorating provided by Cookie ... greenery, fresh flowers, dropped off that morning by Ashlee Kirby, jute and burlap over linen, white, clear and green glass pieces everywhere. I chose lavender as the complementary color, so we had dried lavender spread around in the centerpieces. Everything was lovely. For the cocktail, I mixed equal parts of Bombay Sapphire Gin & Verdi Spumante, lemon juice and a sprig of mint. We also served sweet tea, hot peppermint tea with honey sticks and cucumber water. [beyond pissed that I didn't get a picture of the beverage station!] For the food, I made pasta salad with andouille sausage, cucumber sandwiches [Daigle and I invented a new kind; rye toast with herbed cream cheese, layered cucumbers and a sprig of dill ... divine!], home-style fries with dried herbs. Daigle made a fantastic cheese spread with croissants, open-faced mini shrimp po-boys, and some really awesome fruit salsa with cinnamon and gingerbread pita chips. As for the dessert table, we had cupcakes  and macarons from Buttercups provided by Mari Williford, key lime pie, white chocolate-dipped rice crispy treats, so much delectable fruit and my personal favorite ... kiwi sorbet! I'll be posting some recipes soon; the sorbet was kind of a "wing it" situation for me since I didn't like most of the recipes online, which often happens. But it turned out perfect and was a big hit.

The Symphony House on Centenary's campus provided a beautiful venue. The hundred-year-old historical house is now used by the Shreveport Symphony Guild and can be rented as a venue at a decent price. Cookie, Daigle & I made all the food and decorated the dining room [complete with  wood floors, 15 ft ceilings, a full size harp and grand piano] to the nines. I had such a wonderful time! I'll be posting recipes soon, but for now, here are some pictures ...

I'd like to offer a special thank you to those who came to celebrate with us. There was a lot going on that day including another shower, a wedding, a funeral, and the Cork Wine Festival. So, it truly means a lot to me that you came! I'd also like to thank my hostesses Ashlie Daigle and Cookie DuBois for providing lots of fabulousness for me to work with. I could not have had my dream shower with out you!

IngenuiTEA, get it!?

We drink a lot of tea at the Hesson Haus. I usually find great teas at World Market or even Gucci Brookshires, but over the last year or so, I've been branching out and getting a better idea of what kinds of tea I really like. I really like white tea and I am a big fan of black tea, but not green tea. I can't quite tell you [in a terribly knowledgeable way] why, other than to say ... that's just what I like. I also really like roobios blends! Brandon's favorite is green tea, in any form. I've found that the more you branch out, the more important it is to try loose tea, so you can experiment with the strength and flavor blends to find your favorite.

Making a cup with loose tea is a bit messy, usually. I have a medieval-esque ball and chain steeper that I use quite often, but I found something truly amazing lately, so I thought I'd share! I present to you; my kick-ass purchase the week ...

Great teas! Try Wm. Hooper's Blend or Marie Antoinette. Delicious! Adagio has wonderful teas as well, I'm a big fan of both of these companies. I just love Old Wilmington because it reminds me of my first trip to see the Atlantic Ocean.

Remember my amaze-balls teapot!? Still my number one purchase of 2011.

 Mmm, yummy tea awaits.

:: click :: No, way!

Yes, way. Get your very own from Adagio Teas or stop by Sunshine Health Foods on Youree.
[disclaimer; don't make your tea this strong unless you're used to it! This went over ice and I added mint, which is why it looks so black. Good luck!]

Watermelon Iced Tea ♥

So, I saw a recipe for some watermelon tea the other day. And, of course ... I decided to switch a few things up make my own! The original recipe didn't really turn out that great, so I'd like to think I've improved it a bit. This is really great for barbecues, light, summertime meals and even a cocktail. At the Farmer's Market, I saw a "tendersweet" watermelon ... orange!! I fell in love, of course. I found out they also call them  "yellow meat" watermelons, too. I think "tendersweet" sounds better, but I have to admit, I just call them "ohmygodHalloweenwatermelooooons!"

You'll need:
6 cups chilled green or white tea
2 cups watermelon puree
1 cup pomegranate juice
2 cups cranberry juice
 Splenda to taste [optional ...
... I liked it without, Brandon liked it better with the added sweetness]

Add it all together and enjoy over ice, or with some white rum  for a cool summer cocktail!

When you're done, you can make a fruit boat!! I've never made one before, so I was pretty excited. Just hollow out your watermelon, cut a zig-zag edge and freeze until you're ready to use. It will last a couple of days if wrapped. So fun!

Tallstrunt Tea

I was in the kitchen makin' some pigs in a blanket for Brandon's "poker night" [what a wife, eh?] when Lucas asked me if I'd ever had pine straw tea. Um ... huh? He read about making tea from pine staw in a pioneer cookbook! We have pine trees all around, so we decided to give it a try. After a little research, of course. Apparently there are incorrect ways to do this, but I think I got it just right on the first try, luckily. [before I get started, sorry about my QVC nails ... I give myself a manicure on Fridays and so I haven't painted over them yet! I usually don't wear them so blindingly white!]

The Swedish call this "tallstrunt" tea and it is made with the "ripe" green straw found still on the tree. The cookbook said to just throw it in with some water and boil it down, but I'm pretty sure that when you do that, you're "boiling down" the nutritional value as well. Ancient Romans used pine needle oil to treat a number of ailments including muscle aches and the scent of pine has been an aromatherapy favorite since ancient times as well. Pine straw is packed with vitamins C and A! These are both really important vitamins that we often find ourself scrounging around for in any form. The purest form is always my favorite, so this is definitely going to be a new favorite for me!

You'll need about this much pine straw ...

... slice off the ends and cut the needles in half ...

... if you place your needles in a glass jar [other than a Pyrex] make sure you use a metal spoon to absorb some of the heat so your jar won't break! [thanks, YouTube]
... pour hot [not boiling] water over the needles and steep for about 10 minutes ...

... use a strainer if you don't want needles in your teeth!

... this is how you know you're getting the good stuff! Before and after ...

... for sweetness, add a drop of honey into your mug, or drop an orange slice like we did. It really is delicious without it, I just enjoy citrus flavors in any tea I drink ...

If you're a hot tea drinker, you will absolutely love this. It is smooth and delicious and really versatile! Getting a ton of vitamin C and A while using the aroma to de-stress is the perfect combination. If you're just warming up to drinking tea [pun intended] you could definitely start with this pine needle tea! Cheers! ♥
